The Western Addition is one of San Francisco’s most historically significant and complex neighborhoods. Once the center of the city’s Black cultural life — earning Fillmore Street the name “Harlem of the West” for its jazz clubs during World War II — the neighborhood was dramatically altered by urban renewal in the 1960s and 70s, which displaced thousands of Black residents and replaced Victorian blocks with public housing towers. Today, the Western Addition is a neighborhood in transition once again: the remaining Victorians are being restored and priced for a new demographic, while longtime community institutions and affordable housing developments coexist with upscale restaurants and boutiques along Fillmore.
